Review: Gods of Midnight Series by Deidre Night

I won the first two books of this series over @Gena Showalter’s Blog
and finally started reading them. The story is all about our Spartan heroes. And yes, these heroes are the same Spartans we all know from 300 and they’re as good looking as Gerard Butler. The story starts after the end of the movie so it’s a perfect opportunity to watch it again. *yummy*

Book 1: Red Fire

Description:
Ajax, the youngest of the warriors, finds himself in Savannah, Georgia, poised for a final battle against Sable, his greatest demon foe. Over one thousand years ago, Jax stripped Sable of his wings and transformed him into a twisted centaur. Now Sable has returned for nothing less than brutal vengeance...

It’s in Savannah that Jax encounters the beautiful Shay Angel—the great love of his life prophecied to him more than a thousand years ago. Jax will do anything to protect her from Sable’s demonic onslaught, but Shay isn’t one to stand on the sidelines. Especially since she has her own historical ties to Ancient Greece...(by goodreads.com)

Review:

Ajax is not happy with his immortal existence. Very understandable in my opinion. 2000 years of battling the bad and saving mankind but no real meaning of life for himself. He loves his Spartan brothers and he adores his “mission” but he misses something, or better said someone. The oracle prophecied him a soulmate but that was for over 2000 years and really: no-one can wait so long without getting a little impatient.

Shay just lost her mother and now has to face the problems left concerning family and their business. She lives in a world of demon hunters- every man in their bloodline has this calling and battles the creatures of the night. Only problem is she would like to do the same but the girls aren’t allowed to and what’s more important she shouldn’t be able to see the demons at all. The whole thing gets more confusing when she gets this letter stating that she’s adopted and has the ability to see demons cuz she doesn’t really belong to her family. Now she doesn’t know who to believe and what to do about all this.
They both get together when Shay is attacked of a horde of demons and Jax tries to save her and realizes who he finally has found.

Deidre's writing is full of love and passion. Every time I read her I feel like I could live of her words alone. The characters are complex, sometimes quirky but always lovable, the world is wonderful and full of different facets. I love the way she throws us in the middle of the action and let us see the whole story through the eyes of many characters. In this book is so much story but I never felt overwhelmed. The end was a little predictable but perhaps I just
guesses right.

Book 2: Red Kiss

Description:

Spartan slave River Kassandros can transform into any weapon. After a bloody battle he’s forever a dagger—until a mortal can release him. Drawn to this blade, Emma Lowery draws blood with it and frees River. But even as they fight off intense passions, a sinister power arises to destroy them. To protect humankind, they may have to make the ultimate sacrifice—and lose their chance at love
... (by goodreads.com)

Review:

River is our typical no-confidence Hero. He is a slave and feels like one. (Nearly) All his Spartan brothers support and value him but he don’t seem to accept this. His biggest dream is to be free and to fight with his brothers as a Spartan warrior- same rights and all. He wants to live his own live, to be fully independent and to be his own master. Not only is he bound to Ajax as a herlot he also has the ability/curse to turn into a mighty weapon. This sounds really great but the down point is his condition after he changes back- he turns into berserker with a quite intense sex-drive. No real good condition to meet a lovely girl like Emma.

Emma is Shays cousin and a Listener. She can hear the demons but not see them. She tried to bury her ability deep inside herself after a tragic incident in her past but when she frees River after his 4 months long imprisonment in weapon form there seems to be no way she can hide from her destination any longer. She is strong and is not afraid to go the path life shows her, together with River for their future.
The love between Emma and River is so pure- they are really made for each other. The way their connection builds up through the story is perfectly developed.

The story is fast paced and so full of action I sometimes was afraid to breath cuz I didn’t want to miss something. The life of our Spartans gets more complicated in this book and each one of them has to face a decision in this book. The secondary characters play a big role in this book and I loved it. The story gets so much more depth because of this. It’s also a really good foundation for the next books. I can’t decide who’s story I want to read next- best option would be all at the same time. LOL! She made me really curious here.
Great book with a good cliffhanger in the end so now I’m counting the days till the next book is released.

Thorn Queen by Richelle Mead

Description:

Eugenie Markham is a shaman for hire, paid to bind and banish creatures from the Otherworld. But after her last battle, she’s also become queen of the Thorn Land. It’s hardly an envious life, not with her kingdom in tatters, her love life in chaos, and Eugenie eager to avoid the prophecy about her firstborn destroying mankind. And now young girls are disappearing from the Otherworld, and no one—except Eugenie—seems willing to find out why.

Eugenie has spilled plenty of fey blood in her time, but this enemy is shrewd, subtle, and nursing a very personal grudge. And the men in her life aren't making things any easier. Her boyfriend, Kiyo, is preoccupied with his pregnant ex, and sexy fey king Dorian always poses a dangerous distraction. With or without their help, Eugenie must venture deep into the Otherworld and trust in an unpredictable power she can barely control. Reluctant queen or not, Eugenie has sworn to do her duty—even if it means facing the darkest—and deadliest—side of her nature…
(by goodreads.com)

Review:

This is the second book in the Dark Swan series and I was totally obsessed to get my hands on it. After a long wait in finally arrived at my door and I stopped all my other reading to get this one started. And I was not disappointed at all.

This book starts a few months after the first one. Kiyo moved in with Eugenie, she still fulfills her shaman duties and tries to ignore her queenish obligations. At another duty visit to the Otherworld, a baby shower which was bad enough, she discovers how her people suffer. She never thought about the consequences of turning a land into a desert- what this would mean to her people. Without water and enough to eat they all think its her way to punish them. But that's not the whole problem- gentry girls are disappearing and Eugenie can't turn her back on these problems. Kiyo is mostly busy with Maiwenn and the soon to born Child and surprisingly Dorian is helping her as much as he can.

This book is a little different from the first one. It seems more serious and troubled. Eugenie is torn between the Human and Gentry world more than ever. Which obligations are more important? Is a Human worth more than a Gentry? Is Dorian really only a player? Will Kiyo stay at her site or go back to Maiwenn? Just a few questions she ponders in this book. The whole story is fast paced and runs from one complication into the other. The characters are well drawn and shine from within. I loved the way the story unfolded itself until I reached the last 90 pages. No fun there! I don't want to spoil the book but I don't like the ending so much.
So OK I have to spoil it:
Spoiler starts here:

I hate the way she turns Kiyo down in the end. OK he's not my hero or something but she does because of everything that happened to her and seriously she hates him cuz he didn't want to kill this guy. At this point I was really disappointed. And than she jumps straight in Dorian's arms after she has been raped for a week. Seriously, does anyone believe this? And this sentence: "Make this my memory?" Oh please. At this point I was tempted to through this book wide away. But perhaps I'm just a little bit overreacting. Anyone else found this crazy?

end spoiler!!

So after all it was a good book but the end ruined it a bit. I'm curious about what will happen next.

Review: Leader of the Pack by Karen MacInerney

Description:
WILDLY INDEPENDENT, SHE'S NOT ONE FOR PACK MENTALITY.

On the outside, Sophie Garou is living every woman's dream: she has beauty, brains, and a big-time position in Austin's most respected accounting firm (not to mention a very sexy, very successful new boyfriend). But there's one Sophie would rather keep under wraps: she is a werewolf.

Sophie's life gets a little more hairy when her long-estranged father, Luc, arrives in the Live Music Capital to attend the werewolves' annual Howl and reconnect with his daughter. But Luc's plans fall apart after he's accused of murder and arrested by his arch rival, Wolfgang, leader of the Houston pack (and one notoriously dirty dog). Wolfgang drools at the thought of Luc's impending execution, but Sophie won't let her father die without a fight. Determined to prove his innocence, she and her friends set out to find the real killer. Along the way, Sophie must deal with taboo attractions, Machiavellian intrigues, sinister agendas, and hair-raising betrayals.
(by goodreads.com)

Review:

This is the third book in the Tales of an Urban Werewolf series. This book changes everything in Sophie's world. After 28 years of abstinence she meets her father and she isn't very about this fact from the beginning. Luc Garou is really annoying with his "we are better than the Germans"(I'm so not feeling for Luc- LOL) and you should take over Wolfgang's pack. He's a real Casanova and tries to charm his way in her heart and mind. She doesn't want to have him in her life but she most definitely doesn't want him dead. So she has to save his life when he is accused of being a murder and she has to pull all strings available to her to achieve it.
Sophie tries many things, some more permanent than expected, and seems to run from one dead end to the other. But she doesn't want to give up.
In the middle of this unsolvable situation Marc is pushing her buttons more then ever. He's possessive as Hell and this is no understatement. He offers his help to save her dad but that seems to have a catch, a real big one.
Lindsey still wants to become a werewolf and her advances become more serious.
The real big help is Tom and Sophie is really glad to have him around so much. Who can hold that against her? But he's also still seeing Lindsay- are real dilemma for our little werewolf.

The story is full of new revelations and turnarounds. I was gripped by this story and all the action going on in it from the beginning. But one thing was missing: All the funny situations that made this series so special. You know, these clumsy or embarrassing moments that made me laugh my ass off. OK there were a few funny and witty things but not at all enough for my taste.
After all, it's a good book and I hope we will get a fourth book in this series.

Review: Midnight's Master by Cynthia Eden

Description:
In a world of shadows, desire conquers all...

Tall, dark, and formidable, Niol Lapen is the last demon on earth most people would ask for a favor, yet the sexy little reporter who wanders into his club dares to do exactly that. Holly Storm already knows too much about his kind, and Niol has no wish to help her get in deeper over her head. But working alongside her may be the only way to stop a killer, even as it ignites a primal desire unlike anything he's known.

Holly has seen firsthand what Niol is capable of, but that doesn't frighten her nearly as much as her body's instinctive reaction to him, or the wild, fierce passion that would tempt her to follow him through hell itself. Something evil and relentless is prowling the streets of Atlanta. And as Holly's search leads her into danger that even Niol could never have predicted, she'll uncover a secret that could rip her world apart. (by goodreads.com)

Review:

The third book of the Midnight Trilogy is about the little noisy TV reporter Holly Storm. Since her confrontation with the world of the Other in the last book she sees the world with different eyes. She knows what these Others can do but she don't let herself be intimidated and stays true to her mission: discovering the truth and show it to the world. The whole mess starts when one of her demon informants is killed and she feels determinate to find the one responsible and bring him to justice. She contacts Niol Lapen, sexy level ten demon and mister wet dream in one person. Niol is full of destructive powers and a not so minor attraction to Holly. He tries to shove her as far away as possible while still saving her from her noisy self and its consequences.

Both characters are very fascinating and they held my attention from the beginning. OK, I admit it: Niol had my attention from the first book of the series but I'm a sucker for misunderstood bad guys. ;-) He's very mysterious and so adorable when he starts caring for Holly's wellbeing. He never tries to hide his bad sides and flaws but he don't seem to notice the good ones. I now have the opinion it can't be bad to have your on demon.
Holly is strong and willful despite her knowledge that she's week in comparison to the Others. She never gives up and don't hush away when a certain demon wants her to.

The story itself is breathtaking and fast-paced. Eden's writing style is so gripping that I forgot time completely while reading. Definitely the best book so far in this series and I so hope there will be more despite the name as trilogy. We still have so many things to discover and I want to read it all.

Books read in July!

So last month was a slow one concerning reading but very productive concerning exams lol.
Here is my list:

1. "To Die For" by Linda Howard

Funny read. Blair is really witty and has a serious attitude problem. Wyatt is a real alpha male- bossy and demanding. A quite interesting combination. But something was missing. I don't know why but I liked the second book in this series more.
3 of 5 stars

2. "Ashes of Midnight" by Lara Adrian

When I think about Andreas Reichen I can't imagine a sexy and intriguing man. Along this series I also thought of him as a rather uninteresting person. His power pyrokinesis is a great idea but it didn't make me like Reichen more. His backround story was good and gave his character a new depth.
The story was good. I especially loved the setting in Germany
3 of 5 stars

3. "Prey" by Rachel Vincent

My full review is here.
5 of 5 stars

4. "A Girl's Guide to Vampires" by Kati MacAlister

I read many reviews about this book before deciding to read it. And I have to say the first 50 pages didn't fulfill my expectations. I was prepared for a story about vampires and the main characters thinks they don't exist. When Joy realizes that she stumbled headfirst in a dark world of paranormal creatures I nearly screamed "Took you long enough girl!!!". The story after this point was good. It's a combination of find the bad guy and choose the right man. Roxy can be a little annoying but she is really amiable. Very funny book!!
4 of 5 stars

The next ones are the books read in my exam time so there is no real review but I think I will write them when I have the time for that again.

5. "Midnight's Master" by Cynthia Eden

Wonderful book with the right amount of demon inside!
5 of 5 stars

6. "Seduce the Darkness" by Gena Showalter

Devyn is so sexy and adorable and he knows it. I never thought I would like such an arrogant character but OMG he's gogeous.
5 of 5 stars

7. "Branded by Fire" by Nalini Singh

My inner kitty still screams to have her own little wolf, so I think that's said enough so far!
5 of 5 stars

8 . "City of Souls" by Vicki Pettersson

I love these series and this book brought some new aspects and unexpected developments. Heartbreaking!
5 of 5 stars

9. "Talk Me Down" by Victoria Dahl

This book took my by surprise. Yes, I should have guessed. So many people that this is very good book and so on. But seriously, I never thought it would grip so fast and hard. Couldn't stop reading it although I had to learn for my exams. So you are warned its very intoxicating! This is one of the best books I read so far this year and I can't wait to read the second installment! If you haven't read it. Go and get it Now!
5 of 5 stars

I've got my last exam tomorrow so I really should learn now and stop finding ways to avoid it.
